Sinead O’Connor and the Pope’s picture

Since this came up in class today, I just wanted to post more information about Sinead O’Connor ripping up the picture of the Pope on a 1992 episode of Saturday Night Live:

Interview 10 years later

Apparently, in 1992 the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church was already getting attention, but the story hadn’t broken in America, so the SNL audience didn’t understand the connection between her use of “sex abuse” in the song and the picture of the Pope. After looking at this, I think it’s safe to say that, even if you don’t agree with her actions, she had a definite political motivation for what she did.
